This free printable merry christmas banner will fit into your decor no matter your style and color scheme. It's a simple DIY that you can print off, cut and hang in no time!
I'm a fan of DIY Christmas decorations. You don't have to spend that much time, effort or money to create cozy and beautiful Christmas decorations.
I designed this banner to be very simple and classic, so it can fit in with any home design style and any Christmas decor or color scheme.
It's black and white as well, so works well for both black and white and color printers. Sometimes printing a colored design in black and white just looks sad.
And hey, it's a free download!
Grab a cup of hot cocoa, get your family members together, play some Christmas tunes, print and get to snipping.
Where to Put a Merry Christmas Banner
You could really hang it anywhere, but here are a few of my favorite ideas:
Blank wall - Bring a touch of the holiday season to a blank boring space. I have this awkward wall in my kitchen above our table that I don't usually know what to do with. But this Merry Christmas banner fits in nicely there and makes the area a lot more interesting. You'll need to come up with a way to cover the hooks or tape you use to hang the banner, but that can be done pretty easily with a few flowers, greenery picks or bows.
Across a window - This would be beautiful hanging across the top of a large window, possibly over your kitchen sink, in a bedroom or living room.
Under your mantle - If you're lucky enough to have a fireplace (someday I swear I will!), hanging a banner across the front of the mantle is a nice touch, especially if you've got a greenery garland decorated on top of the mantle.
On your Christmas tree - I think this could look great on a large tree. I would decorate it as you like first, then hang the banner gently over your decorations. It'd be easy to secure to branches at the back of the tree.
Temporarily for a certain event - Maybe you don't want this banner up all season, but it's an easy way to decorate for a holiday event such as a Christmas party.
Merry Christmas Banner Variations
I designed the letters in a way that you can make subtle changes based on your preference. Here are the 4 ways you could cut out each banner piece:
- No black border. Cut all the surrounding black off.
- Leave the black strip at the top. This is my preference! Cut the black off the sides and bottom.
- Leave the black on the top and sides. Adds some subtle definition to the sides.
- Leave all the black surrounding the letter, closing it in.
I think all these ways of cutting out the letters can look great, it just depends on what you like best.
Here are a few other things you can do differently:
- Include or disregard the exclamation point. Some prefer to have an exclamation point at the end of a banner like this. After all, that's how we'd say the words, "Merry Christmas!" But if you don't want that, just don't print the last page.
- If you'd like some different colors you can print the banner on colored paper (a gold banner would be gorgeous with the black letters!), or add your own artistic touch with colored markers or pencil crayons after printing. You could also use a colorful string or ribbon to hang the banner on.
- If you have a really long space, you can hang the 2 words beside each other on the same string, instead of using a separate string for each word and placing the "Christmas" banner underneath the "Merry" banner.
- To attach the letters to the string, you could use a hole punch to punch holes in both top corners of each letter and weave the string through. I just don't like that look as much!
- Type of paper. I used printer paper because it's the cheapest, it's what I had on hand and it's what my printer can handle. Feel free to use card stock if that's an option for you! Your banner will definitely be more sturdy.

How to Make Merry Christmas Banner
Cut out the letters.
After cutting all the letters out, you'll need to decide on the length of your string.
Lay out the letters and decide how close you want them to be. I made mine about ½ inch apart.
Lay out the string along the banner, pick an approximate length by holding the string on both ends, then test it where you want to hang the banner, just to ensure the length will work.
For mine, the "Merry" banner string was 53 inches long and the "Christmas" banner string was 60 inches long. Make the string a little longer than you think is necessary, just in case you need some extra room.
Cut the string and begin to attach your letters. Start by finding the centre of each string (you can just fold it in half and mark the middle point) and attach the middle letter of the word. "R" in merry and "S" in Christmas. For best results, put a piece of tape on the top corner of each letter. That way the letter will hang exactly how you want them to.
Attach the rest of the letters, working outwards.
How to Hang Merry Christmas Banner
I taped my banners to the wall with scotch tape and haven't had any issues with damage to the paint. If you're worried about that you could also hang some small, clear command hooks and tie the banner strings up to them.
How to Store Merry Christmas Banner
With a banner like this, I like to remove the letters from the string and store them in a stack in a ziploc bag with the same string. That way, it's easier to keep the letters nice and flat, but still keep everything together.
You could also try to fold the letters together while still on the string for quicker setup next year.
If you're not into saving physical items, you could save the PDF file and reprint next year.
