Sourdough french toast is made by soaking homemade sourdough bread in a custardy egg mixture and frying until golden! It's easy to make, so delicious and perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Our go-to breakfast has been soaked oatmeal for a while now, but it's nice to have some healthy alternatives for weekend breakfasts or special occasions. This delicious french toast is one of those!
It's so easy, yet you can make it feel so fancy. There are so many different ways to top french toast too!
I love topping them with a pat of butter, fresh berries and a small drizzle of pure maple syrup.
Eat it with some sausage or bacon for a delicious sweet and salty meal!
Is Sourdough French Toast Healthy?
Sourdough french toast is much more nutritious than french toast made with regular bread (made with commercial yeast).
Sourdough bread is fermented and this process breaks down the phytic acid naturally found in wheat, which would otherwise block your body from absorbing nutrients!
The fermenting process also lowers the gluten content in the bread, rendering it much more digestible and nutrient-rich.
Sourdough is also full of gut-healthy prebiotics and also has a low glycemic index, meaning it won't spike your blood sugar!
The healthiest sourdough bread is made with whole wheat, but white sourdough bread also has similar benefits.
Use pastured eggs and raw whole milk (or heavy cream!) for the most nutrient-dense french toast. The only other ingredients are vanilla, salt and cinnamon (+butter or coconut oil for cooking). This is a simple and nutritious recipe!
Can Sourdough Be Used for French Toast?
Sourdough is an excellent bread option for french toast! It's much healthier than regular bread and has a more complex flavor. The slight tang of the fermented bread goes so well with the traditionally sweet toppings used on french toast.
What Kind of Sourdough Bread Should I Use?
Any type of sourdough bread will work with this recipe. My first recommendation would be this very easy sourdough sandwich bread, but you could use any other homemade or storebought sourdough bread (chocolate sourdough bread would be a fun way to switch it up). Keep in mind that crusty sourdough bread may not be as ideal as a softer bread for french toast, but will still work!
Sourdough French Toast Toppings
There are many options for topping your french toast slices, but here are a few ideas:
- Fresh fruit or berries
- Fruit or berry compote
- Maple syrup
- Butter
- Whipped cream
- Yogurt
- Peanut butter (or any nut or seed butter)
- Strawberry chia jam
- Peach chia jam
- Pumpkin spice sauce
Sourdough French Toast Tips
- If you have some stale bread, this is a great way to use it up! Fresh bread works great too!
- Use thick slices of bread for best results, about ¾-1 inch in thickness. If the slices are too thin, they'll likely fall apart when you soak them.
- I don't sweeten the egg mixture, since we use sweet toppings like fruit or syrup on the toast anyways. No point adding sugar where you won't notice it!
- Soak the bread in the egg mixture for at least 3 minutes. Sourdough bread soaks up liquid more slowly than regular bread, so don't skip the soaking!
- Make sure the pan is fully preheated before cooking. This will ensure that beautiful crisp outside and that your toast won't stick.
- If you are doubling or tripling the recipe for a large family or brunch event, use a baking sheet or large cake pan to mix the custard mixture and multiple cast iron pans or a griddle for cooking.
